I recently was startled to see the value of my manga collection at over $14,000!!! It took me a moment to realize that this value was assuming that I had paid full retail price on my manga volumes (which I RARELY DO). But I probably paid about 75% of that value for my collection, that’s still a lot of money. But no regrets
I’ve been collecting manga since the Sailor Moon manga was first introduced in the US about 12 years ago, so it’s only natural I’d have this much (lol…yes…natural…). Manga is something very special to me, probably even more special than anime and figures. So I almost never sell my manga, there have only been a few rare exceptions that usually involve me accidentally buying doubles. I wonder if I’ll be able to keep my entire collection until the end of my days, would be nice. I also wonder if their value will go up, or plummet with the digital age beginning to take over books?
EDIT: A list of my manga series owned can be found here.
Actually, I manage to squeeze almost my entire collection onto two bookcases. Each shelf that doesn’t have large figures on it has two rows. This REALLY limits my access to the manga in the back row, but I put all the series that I’ve completed and read a few times back there. So it’s not too often I have to pull everything apart to find something.

Since I began the move to my new home about a year ago I put my incoming Yen Plus Anthologies to the side. Now I’ve finally decide to catch up again, and I’m enjoying myself a lot
Yen Press is really worming themselves deep into my heart, I find myself happy when I hear they’ve gotten the license of a series I want. This anthology is a great experience for me too, it has me try out series that I wouldn’t have otherwise taken the time to try. I feel like I’m more open minded now about what series I’ll read now. A few nights ago I hit the issue where they start Black Butler, I’m loving this series a lot more than I thought I would. Sebastian started winning me over with just the first chapter, a little voice in my head is squeaking that maybe I should have gotten that Sebastian Nendoroid after all. Nightschool, I actually went into this series thinking I wouldn’t like it. I probably would have skipped it altogether if the art style didn’t pull my eye in. Now I REALLY like this series, and I’m smitten with the art. It’s so unique compared to what I’m used to. I plan on trying out Dramacon from this author too. I especially enjoy that she seems to always have an extra comic at the end that lets me get to know her more.
Pig Bride was one where I initially was only half interested, but this series pulled me in hard when the history behind all these events started revealing itself. Although that often seems to be the case with me, I think a series is so-so until I start to see the events that prelude volume 1 (ex: this happened with Claymore and Berserk for me). I’m also still enjoying Jack Frost. This series is dark, and has me confused. But for some reason I’m still wrapped around its finger. I hope the ending of all this meets my expectations
Also I’m having fun reading Cat Paradise, I really like this mang-ka’s art style. This series is your typical situation where a group of high schoolers are saving the human world from ancient creatures, but its done well. Gunslinger Girl is alright, but honestly I was expecting to like this series a lot more than I do. I like this series, I just don’t LOVE IT.

That’s dizzy numbers! LoooL more than 1400 mangas! Congrats! Still it stays reasonable considering it took you 12 years to gather this amount.
I own around 600 myself but i only started 2 and a half years ago. But for now i stopped because i’m dedicating more on figures. However i still bought Black Butler because i’m an anime fan and i wanted to read the manga as well.

Isnt it masochistic to take a look at those numbers?
I try to stay away from these kind of statistics since they make me realize how much money ive spent.
I usually order english manga and save quite a bunch on it but im still far away from such an impressive number as yours

Now that’s a lot of manga!!!
I scaled down a bit in my manga purchases due to lack of room. I might resume again once I move very soon.
Still…a manga collection that is worth $14000!!!!!!
It makes me wonder how much does my manga collection is worth…

Wow over 1400 manga, then again you’ve had 12 years to amass it all. I have over 350 right now and I’ve been buying them for five years now.
I’ve been debating getting black butler and Pig Bride. I liked Pig Bride from what I read, but I wasn’t sure how it would be later on (early chapter).

@ Lyli – I started collecting figures 2 years ago, I got so caught up in figures in the beginning that I let some of my manga series stay unfinished for a while. But then I started realizing that manga is going Out Of Print more frequently these days! I balanced things out a bit more.
@ Blowfish – I usually avoid looking at these kinds of statistics, but when I use JustManga to keep track of my collection they stare at you at the top of your collection summary page.
@ Rin – The funny thing is no matter how I look at my manga collection I don’t see a value of $14,000 in that corner of the room. There are still SO MANY amazing series out there that I don’t own!
@ Open – The number is even larger because I was disorganized about always posting to JustManga when I bought more.

Now that is an impressive collection. I probably will not have my collection forever. I usually go through spurts where I sell a lot of stuff so I can get more stuff. I usually get my stuff on sale or use a coupon.
I agree about Nightschool – I kept putting it down, but finally got it. It is a good story and my wife loves anything with the supernatural in it anyway.

lovely collection ^^ you’ve been collecting/reading a few years longer than me but have over 3x the volumes ^^; (errr i think… haven’t done a count recently…)
have they resumed the yotsuba translation yet? i recently picked up volume 9 and remembered/lamented that english fans were being deprived of its glory ^^;;
looks like the stuff you’re reading is pretty different from my recent stuff… ‘course most of what i read is obscure 4-koma ^^;;;

You own more manga than I’ve read in my life for sure. I’ve only been buying manga for a short time in comparison though, but I know for a fact I’ll never own that amount of manga XD I admire your dedication and reading capabilities ^^ I would like to think that the worth would go up as digital media increases and books become less used. They’re more of a rarity that way. There will always be people like me who prefer to read real books whenever possible over online scans.

@ blue – I have periods where I’ll switch out some items for others. Although I usually do this with figures.
@meron – THEY HAVE! Yen Press rescued Yotsuba! Most of the stuff I own is main stream, but if it wasn’t it would be harder to get it licensed and released in English.
@persocom – I’d like to think they’ll go up in value too. But it’s fine by me if they end up being worth pennies. If I encountered a time of financial desperation then selling my manga wouldn’t be a useful option and I could keep it all guilt free. But if we needed money to keep our home (or something like that) then I wouldn’t be able to live with myself and keep the collection if I could sell it and save us. I don’t plan on being in that situation, but who knows what life will bring.
