Oresama Teacher Review

I must say that the cover art from this series certainly doesn’t draw me in, although titles that involve the word teacher in it doesn’t appeal to me too much either :) Too many cheap ways to write a high school series come to mind as soon as I realize the main characters are a female student and a male teacher…but it turns out this series is nothing like I imagined from the cover. The only reason why I gave this series a try was because it kept popping up on my Amazon recommended list when looking at various shoujo series. I sampled a few volumes online before I committed to collecting/reading the series. I must admit I love scans when I’m in a situation where I’m torn on going after a series or not, they’re very helpful when I can’t flip through it in a bookstore. Plus…as unashamed of my hobby as I am…I still feel weird flipping through manga volumes next to kids 10 years younger than me. I always feel like those young eyes are looking at me with questions about figuring out how into manga I am. Plus I really don’t like picking up ones that have labels that scream “mature content” in front of the young ones too (patheticly scratching at the wrapping to see if it’s a series I actually would want to read). Although the questioning eye part might be my over active imagination :)

March Story Review

At the time of this review only two volumes are released, I was torn on if I should wait for more volumes before making a review but what the hell, why not? It’s my blog and I’ll do what I want :)  I initially negatively judged the first volume by its cover, the art was nice but I didn’t really didn’t care for the protagonist’s appearance. He simply looked like a baby-faced boy (with horns and a tail) that runs around in a jester costume. I guess that combination just didn’t compute somewhere in my mind and I left the series alone. But a single glance at a gorgeously ornately drawn panel from the first volume immediately made me buy it without reading a word of the blog review. Bluedrakon is also enjoying this series. This is one of those situations where buying my manga purely off Amazon/online might prevent me from getting a title I might otherwise grab after flipping through it. But I suppose that point is moot, because I’d imagine all of these volumes are tightly wrapped for its mature content. I don’t know about you guys but when I’m in a bookstore I can’t bring myself to tear through the plastic to actually browse through it and see what I’m buying. But I suppose we’re not supposed to do that anyway…

The Record of a Fallen Vampire Manga Review

When I ordered this series I happened to actually show a picture of my manga haul (which I rarely do) and I didn’t realize that I pretty much had a vampire theme going on! I also had manga from Dance in the Vampire Bund and Rosario+Vampire!? So I stopped and thought about how many vampire manga series I own…and it’s QUITE a few! I think someday I’d like to do a post that lists them all, and in my order of preference. And I’ll tell you one thing right now The Record of a Fallen Vampire will assuredly be towards the top. Based on all my vampire manga you’d think I’d be wacky for vampires, but I’m not particularly obsessed with them. When it comes to supernatural tales this is how I view things Ghosts > Yokai > Zombies > Vampires > Werewolves > Witches. BUT if we’re talking horror (and not just the supernatural) a crafty serial killer will always trump everything else for me :)

Genkaku Picasso Manga Review

I’m going to confess something…the reviews where I OVERWHELMINGLY enjoy a series are the hardest for me to write, because in my excitement to shout my joy to the world the words that come from my brain to the laptop are scattered and uncoordinated. I’d almost go as far as to say that the reviews where my writing was the worst are the series I loved the most. So…I’ll just say this before I move on and feebly attempt to communicate reasons why this series is worthwhile…I HIGHLY recommend Genkaku Picasso, it’s by far the most unique Shonen Jump series I’ve ever encountered. It’s a well planned story in only 3 volumes total. Go for it!

Solanin Manga Review

I saw a positive review of this manga somewhere at one point, and on impulse I dropped it into my Amazon cart before checkout. The biggest reason why I didn’t have to think about risking starting this series or not, was because Viz had released this two volume story as a single volume. Instant gratification! I can get the entire story in a single sitting without rolling around in agony while waiting for the next release. Plus lately I’ve been trying to look for new types of manga to try, and this series didn’t sound much like anything I’ve read recently. My only concern had been that this story might end up being too serious, luckily that wasn’t the case.
